Eric Church, ‘Country Music Jesus’ — Story Behind the Lyrics

One of the most thought-provoking songs on Eric Church‘s chart-topping, Grammy-nominated ‘Chief’ album is ‘Country Music Jesus.’ Co-written by the country star with Jeremy Spillman, the song laments those who think country music needs “saving” by someone who’s “preaching from the book of Johnny Cash.” Eric sat down with The Boot to explain the song’s defiant lyrics.
“That song is a little tongue-in-cheek,” Eric insists. “There was a particular critic who was lumping me in with a new generation, a new breed, and they didn’t like where the music was heading. [The critic thinks] that we need to harken back to Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings — to make that kind of music. It bothered me, because though I revere Cash and Waylon, I don’t think we make the same music they did. They made different music than Hank Williams made. Even at a later time, guys like Garth Brooks came along and made different music. They changed the genre.

CMA announces Garth Brooks, Hargus “Pig” Robbins, and Connie Smith as the 2012 inductees for the Country Music Hall of Fame
The Country Music Association announced yesterday that Garth Brooks, Hargus “Pig” Robbins, and Connie Smith will become the newest members of the coveted Country Music Hall of Fame. The announcement was made by Kix Brooks this morning during a private press event in the Rotunda of the Country Music Hall of Fame. All three inductees were on hand for the announcement. Kix Brooks also moderated a panel with the inductees during the Ninth Annual CMA Artist Luncheon in the afternoon.
Garth Brooks will be inducted in the “Modern Era Artist” category, while Smith will be inducted in the “Veterans Era Artist” category. Robbins will be inducted in the “Recording and/or Touring Musician Active Prior to 1980” category, which is awarded every third year in a rotation with the “Non-Performer” and “Songwriter” categories. The new inductees will increase membership in the coveted Country Music Hall of Fame from 115 to 118 inductees.
Induction ceremonies for Garth Brooks, Robbins, and Smith will take place at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum later this year. Since 2007, the Museum’s Medallion Ceremony, an annual reunion of the Hall of Fame membership, has served as the official rite of induction for new members.
CMA created the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961 to recognize noteworthy individuals for their outstanding contributions to the format with Country Music’s highest honor.

On Tuesday (Jan. 31), the Country Music Association Foundation announced a .4 million donation to benefit music education programs in Nashville’s public schools. Chris Young and Suzy Bogguss were both on hand for the announcement of the donation, which the CMA makes annually to its Keep the Music Playing program on behalf of all the musicians who perform and appear at the annual CMA Music Festival free of charge.
“It means a lot because I’m from the area, but really what the CMA is doing — the fact that they’re donating .2 million specifically to music education — is really fantastic,” Middle Tennessee native Chris tells The Boot. “There are a lot of kids who will be exposed to things that they might never have been exposed to had this money not been there to help supplement and support them. When I was in school, I found out a lot about music that I would never have found outside on my own.”

The video mostly features some soldiers in action, with some hometown flashbacks and shots of the band. I think the song is great, but I’d like to know what your thoughts are. So don’t be shy…watch then comment below!
